Youth Smoking Prevention Programs
print page
Youth smoking has become one of the most serious issues in the debate around tobacco. As cigarette manufacturers we have an important role to play in addressing this problem. We firmly believe that minors should not smoke. This commitment is an important aspect of our business ethics. It is wrong for minors to smoke, and we do not engage in any activities whatsoever designed to encourage minors to become smokers. This principle of business behavior has been reflected in the International Marketing Standards (IMS), a comprehensive document signed in 2001 by major tobacco companies that for the first time applies worldwide, ensuring that tobacco advertising is not targeted at youth nor is appealing to young people.
Our Programs
Retail Access Prevention | Education | Advertising
As a responsible company selling a controversial product we complement our ethical business behavior with meaningful initiatives contributing to the reduction of youth smoking. Such initiatives do not contradict our primary business objectives. Our client base is adult smokers only and in no way do we benefit by selling cigarettes to kids. Moreover, we have a commercial interest in facing the problem of youth smoking and actively contributing to its prevention. Society has become increasingly aware of the problems related to youth smoking. For us to be able to continue operating as a successful business in the future, we must act in the way that corresponds to society’s expectations and address the problem of youth smoking.
What JTI is doing about the youth smoking problem
We have initiated, and participate in Youth Smoking Prevention (YSP) programs around the world. However, youth smoking is a complex societal issue with many factors at play and as such cannot be addressed solely by the tobacco industry. We encourage cooperation with others in society who are interested in finding a solution to this problem. Therefore, when achievable, the YSP programs are designed and launched in collaboration with governments, parent associations, educators and other local partners. The aim of these programs is to help stop children smoking. Not to look good or seek credit, but simply because it's the right thing to do.
